A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
