Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
