Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the ability to question certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
